" A fine coherent design that showcases light, champions form as well as function, and sits perfectly apposite to its smart inner-urban locale.....It's also very green here with solar power, hot water, hydronic heating and double glazing......A beautiful sculptured black balustrade infuses the space with dramatic intensity. Upstairs the treetops and rooflines of Carlton and beyond spread across every window, from the excellent shower to the bedroom.

Reviews of this property
I was only two full days in Melbourne and did not want one of these unpersonnal hotels. The place 'the olive tree' of don and jan was a lovely place to be. A quite victorian area close to melbourne (only 15 minutes with tram 96). The house build and decorated with taste. The room simple and fine with light bathroom. Jan and don were very friendly and edicated. Don did bring me to the city twice. They looked aftrr me a bid. Great breakfast with muesli, different yogurts etc. In other words a place to remember
Only a short stay at the olive tree with Don unfortunatly. The most friendly and welcoming people in melbourne felt completely at home in their house. Would recomend anyone to stay there.
Thank you Don for everything your accomodation and meeting you made our weekend.
Don and Janet are very friendly hosts. They worked very hard to us, gave us good advice and prepares a wonderful breakfast. In an increasingly well-kept room we slept well. In modern separate Bathroom we could refresh ourselves. Your home and garden that we could use with, are very attractively decorated The house is quietly located next to a park, from there you can easily reach all the important points in Melbourne. Despite our somewhat lueckenhaften English we had some intresting conversation and have discovered many similarities in our private and professional lives.
We can stay with Jan and Don unreservedly recommend it are wonderful people.

It was a warm experience to stay with Don and Jan, we felt most welcome.
The room was lovely and the bathroom outstanding, could recomment it to everybody.
Graceous and generous hosts, Don and Jan could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Long term residents of this very urbane Melbourne area North Carlton reminiscent of Paris with its wide streets and oak trees, and Italy with its famous Italian fare, they could recommend resturants for dinner, pastries to nibble over great coffee all about, boutiques for shoes! and the marvellous Nova cinema with its Art House films. Film buffs delight, to mention but a few.
Transport knowledge and use of the Melbourne transport card "Myki" which the hosts supplied for our convenience, made the city and beyond accessible. We just topped up the card throughout. We also had a leisurely walk one sunny morning to downtown.
Due to one of us falling ill Don exceeded the normal host call-of-duty when he booked his doctor for us and drove and collected us. Much appreciated, as otherwise being debilitated would have interferred with or curtailed our holiday.
Inside their lovely home, the bedroom and bathroom are privately located upstairs.
Arriving in this coolish but sunny climate from a tropical country we were temperature sensitive and fortunately were able to make use of the heating and air conditioning. There is a ceiling fan for summer time too.
After a very comfortable sleep, Jan supplied a breakfast of fruit and yoghurt, and Don had whipped down to the local bakery and purchased fresh bread which we topped with their very favourite Dutch cheeses procured from the iconic Victoria Market. We gladly took a trip also to the market with Don driving to soak up the Easter frenzy. We could not resist more Dutch Cheese (Midnight Blue..hope you two enjoyed the remains), and various French varieties and deli items along with the very special Good Friday Fish. A very continental and leisurely breakfast ensued at their family dining table, repeated most mornings.
We enjoyed a sense of home, nibbling on cookies Jan had baked, as all chatted back and forth as our hosts went about their daily business. We learnt so much from Don's vast experiences. Thank you Don and good luck with the forthcoming publication of your book.
Cheers and we enjoyed the nightcap.
See you and Jan next time we touch Australian shores
Fabulous location. This property is close to the CBD and some terrific wine bars and Restraunt's. It's location also provides a peaceful and serene refuge even though it offers all of the above mentioned benefits.
Don is a delightful host who is most welcoming and helpful with suggestions of good eateries and local attractions.
Clean and a most adequate continental breakfast was served each morning. We will most certainly be back.
Just a 10 minutes ride with the tram from CBD in a quiet victorian street you will find perfect Melbourne hosts Don and Jan in their jewell of home which they are willing to share with you. Excellent bars, coffee shops and restaurants are around the corner. Don and Jan will help you with anything that might come up and give you great insight regarding life in Melbourne. I hope to be able to return one day.
We stayed one week at Jan and Don’s place just after we have arrived in Melbourne. The house is warm and thoughtfully decorated and the room is clean and cosy. The bathroom is bright and shiny as sunlight floods it through a big window. The house is just the right place to stay and feel comfortable!
It’s just one minute away from the lively Rathdowne Street in North Carlton with really good restaurants. You can even have a nice walk to Lygon Street, Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street or Smith Street or even CBD, or if you prefer to take the tram, it’s just a few steps from the house.
The hosts will give you a warm welcome when you stay with them and you will immediately realize that they are real locals who are happy to share all you would like to know about Melbourne! They make you feel at home and you have time to relax.
We really had a perfect stay and can highly recommend The Olive Tree. Thanks a lot for everything! Vielen herzlichen Dank für alles! Michael und Leonie
